Mitchell High School, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, was celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015. The alumni planning team asked me to create a promotional logo for the event.
The number 50 needed to be the key focus in the design. The school’s colors are blue and orange. Airplanes have been a key icon in the high school, since the school was named for General William Mitchell (who served in World War I and is regarded as the father of the United States Air Force).
With the number 50 as a starting point, I added wings (resembling a pilot wings pin) to signify the service and career of General William Mitchell. The name of the school was placed in an orange band around the number 50 to make it stand out. The darker blue created a background for the design. I decided on a circular design for the logo for its visible similarities to a vinyl record album or a 45 record (appealing to older alumni) and a Compact Disk (appealing to younger alumni).
The logo was used for pin-on buttons and in website graphics.
