I’ve been practicing my hand at modern calligraphy, which is a style of writing created with a pointed tip pen (or pencil, ball point pen, Micron pen). The downward strokes of the letters are made bolder with additional strokes and filling in with the pen.
A friend asked me to stylize the words to her favorite verse: Live by faith, not by sight. I thought this would be the perfect time to practice my skills. After sketching some initial layouts of the words, I used tracing paper to copy the design still using the modern calligraphy technique each step of the way. Next, I took a snapshot of the final handwritten text with my cell phone and emailed it to myself.
The text photo was brought into Adobe Illustrator, where I digitally traced and refined each letter and design element. With a few outline strokes and filling the base letters with a color gradation, the overall result was quite pleasing.
The design was added to my Society6 shop (as seen on this coffee mug) and my RedBubble shop (as seen on these stickers).
