While on tour in Madagascar, my tour guide (whose name is Lala) jokingly talked about a “benevolent dictator” concept. I decided to humor him and came up with a “Lala for President” graphic on my cell phone that named him as a Benevolent Dictator. He loved the graphic so much that he requested business cards with the same design.
The main element in the design was based on the outline of a zebu head, which I had seen as a wallhanging art piece in a hotel. The zebu is like an ox or cow with a hump on its back and is considered to be a status symbol. The zebu is common throughout Madagascar and is used for plowing fields, pulling carts, and for food.
I wanted to make sure that Lala could change the text on the business card if needed. So, I chose Arial as the typeface since it is widely used and readily available throughout the world. The business card was placed on an orange gradient background, since that was what the original graphic displayed. But the design could be printed on card stock of any color.
Finally, I included a copy of the zebu head graphic in case it was needed by the printer or for other promotional items.
