I was given an assignment to create three coins or tokens for General Mills in West Chicago that would be used to honor Team Leaders in the facility. The three titles would be:
- John Wooden – Great Coach Award
- Leading With Safety
- Team Leader Rock Star
The coins would be 1.5 inches in diameter and needed to include the General Mills “Big G” logo and the West Chicago location. Each coin design should be different.
I recommended adding color to each coin to help the designs stand out. Blue is a standard General Mills color and was used on the Great Coach coin. Red is traditionally a vibrant alert color and was used on the Safety coin. White was chosen for the TL Rock Star coin because of its contrast with the gray metal of the coin.
Plant Management loved the designs and were thrilled with the look of the actual coins when they arrived. Team Leaders proudly displayed them on their desks when they received them. After the West Chicago facility achieved one of the best safety records in the company, Plant Management decided to give each salaried employee a Safety coin at an off-site Safety Day event for their combined efforts in improving the Safety culture at the plant.
