A Musical Parody

WorkNet DuPage

In the autumn of 2017, I attended a series of job seeking workshops at the WorkNet DuPage offices. As a creative exercise, I thought it would be fun to write a light-hearted musical parody describing the employment search experience. The workshop instructor loved the idea and allowed me to sing it (in my non-singing voice) after one of the workshops.

To the tune of “The Beverly Hillbillies” TV show theme:

Come listen to a story ’bout some folk from Illinois
They want to work, but they find they’re unemployed
So now they gather at the WorkNet in DuPage
To learn how to prep and to find a living wage…
With tools, that is…
Business cards
And resumes.

Well, the next thing you know these folks are getting calls
Employers said, “Hey, get it on the ball!”
They said, “We are looking for someone to join our group,
So we’re hoping that you’re open and will come to interview…
For a job, that is…
With benefits
And salaries!”
