Hark!

Hark!

I belong to a travel group called “My Travel Meetup” which hosts several dinner events, in addition to international travel opportunities. For our annual Christmas gathering, the leader of the group asked me to write a song about travel to the tune of a Christmas carol.

Once I decided on a specific song, I based the content on travel-related actions including air flight, hotels, touring, shopping, and an overall travel experience. I wanted to include the name of the group “My Travel Meetup” and their tagline “We Go Places.” Here’s the final rendition:

(To the tune of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing“)

Hark! My Travel Meetup sing,
Boarding now at Gate 15.
Line up here in single file,
Please move quickly down the aisle.
Stow your bags, we do advise,
Seat belts on, enjoy your flight.
How the pilot dost proclaim:
Eight more hours in this plane!
Hark! The flight attendants sing,
Landing now, so grab your things.
Leave the plane, then find our guide,
Hail the transport bus we ride.
Hotel lobby looks real neat,
Check in rooms, then out to eat.
Off to sleep, then early rise,
Tour the towns and see the sights.
Born to shop where e’er we go.
Born to travel to and fro.
Hark! My Travel Meetup sing,
We Go Places” traveling!

Writing the words to this song seemed to happen quite easily, as I have traveled several times with the group. However, I realized later that this Christmas carol moves into higher and higher vocal ranges as the song progresses. It was quite the challenge for me to sing without my voice fading off with the higher notes at the end of each stanza. But it was all done in good fun! And we had the group join in with the singing, thankfully, which helped to drown out my seemingly waning voice.
